The AI industry is on fire.
And according to current trends2, AI is about to explode.
Here are three facts that will blow your mind:
1. AI is the fastest-growing industry ever
Five years ago, only geeks and tech gurus knew about the power of AI.
That all changed with ChatGPT’s release on Wednesday, 30th November 2022.
ChatGPT opened the floodgates, and there are no signs of slowing down.
Let’s look at what AI is currently doing now.
- 77% of currently used devices already feature AI.
- 35% of all businesses use AI day-to-day.
- 85% of business-customer relationships are managed without human interaction.
- 4 out of 5 companies are making AI implementation their top priority.
- By 2025, AI will eliminate 85 million jobs but create 97 million new ones, resulting in a net gain of 12 million jobs.
There won't be ANY part of our lives that AI won't affect.
And as an educator, you better get with the program (pun intended.)
2. The AI industry is worth half a trillion US dollars
This is an impressive stat at face value.
But what’s 10 times more impressive is that the global AI industry will be worth $1.81 trillion by 2030 — almost four times the amount now.
For context, by 2030, the AI industry will be worth more than Amazon and Meta combined!
This is a signal of where things might be headed.
The last time the world saw excitement like this was in August 1998, when the late great Steve Jobs launched the first iMac.
They called it the ‘personal computer revolution’, which changed everything.
And I’m betting the same thing will happen here.
But even bigger.
3. AI is coming for the education sector - fast
Investment in the global tech market is predicted to soar to $2.03 billion by the end of the year.
To give you a sense of how big that is, that’s the current worth of Arsenal Football Club.
Or almost the same size as Jay-Z’s investment portfolio.
Or worth 180 of the most expensive Lamborghinis ever made.
I’ve followed EdTech for a while, and some AI products being developed are astounding.
In the 5 years, we may see:
1) AI curated lesson plans
2) Virtual teaching assistants
3) Instant classroom content creation
4) Real-time performance analytics
5) Immersive AI-driven VR simulations
Even if half these innovations reach the classroom, they could turn education on its head.
Your role as the teacher may become unrecognisable.
Final Prediction
Why have I told you all of this?
Because I need to scream it from the rooftops.
AI is not a ‘fad.’
AI is here to stay.
If I looked in my crystal ball, I don’t think humans would completely disappear from the classroom. I can’t see Johnny Tableflipper listening to C3PO.
But I think our pastoral skills will be more critical than ever.
AI will handle the academics, while humans provide emotional support and 'co-pilot' the class with the machines.
Do I like this idea?
I’m on the fence at the moment. The technological implications are as incredible as they are terrifying.
In a way, we are already here. The Internet drives the global economy.
AI is just the next logical step. It's too late to stop it.
Am I preparing for it?
Most definitely.
This is why I started the ‘Teach Outside the Robot’ newsletter.
We can successfully integrate these new technologies into our classrooms without losing our humanity.
Rather than letting technology completely take over every aspect of education, we must ‘teach outside the robot’ to motivate and engage our classes.
No machine will ever be able to do that.
We need to stay ahead.
And I know the perfect event to help us do that.
I am delighted to announce that I am one of the official partners of Schools and Academies Schow (SAAS) and their co-located event, the EdTech Summit, which will take place on Wednesday, 20th November, in Birmingham.
And they are the proud sponsors of this week's newsletter!
SAAS gets it.
If you want to know what the future of our sector looks like, you’ll probably find it in SAAS.
With over 200+ speakers, 200+ exhibitors, and 50+ hours of CPD-certified content, you’ll leave the day with the toolkit you need to leave a lasting impact on your school.
And this is my favourite bit:
This year’s SAAS show is co-located with the EdTech Summit, an event that brings together forward-thinking EdTech enthusiasts actively shaping the sector's future through technology.
I’m going to the event armed with my notepad, ready to discover how AI will shape the sector's future.
